What's Happening In January?

Happy New Year!

We are so excited to be back in session at CCSD #1. While the Christmas break was relaxing, it is great to be back in school with happy children. There is no doubt that this semester will be over before we know it, so we want to take advantage of the time we have to make sure your child receives the best education possible.

Here are a few things you should know about this month:

Who Says There Is No Such Thing as a Free Lunch (or Breakfast)?

If you haven't heard, all students will be receiving free breakfasts and lunches during the entire month of January. Here is what that will look like. Each day, your child will enter their number at mealtime. The cost of the meal will be deducted from their account. On Fridays, we will put the money back into each student's account that they spent that week (excluding charges for supersize). That means that during the week, you may see your child's account going down or with a negative balance. By Friday evening, those numbers will be corrected, and the balances will be accurate. On Sunday, if your child's meal balance is negative, you will receive an automated call letting you know your child's balance. If you receive that call, it is accurate. If your child has a negative balance, please take advantage of this month to add money to their account, so they are ready to go in February. Of course, if your financial situation has changed during the year, you can always fill out an application for free or reduced-cost meals. You can find this application on Power School or by contacting the school office. If you have any questions about this process, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Make-up Snow Days

Our Christmas break was extended by a few days with some lovely Wyoming winter. To make up those two snow days, we will have school on February 10th and March 31st.

School Board Training

Rod Kessler from the Wyoming School Board Association will be conducting a training for all of our school board trustees on Monday, January 9th, at 5 pm. The meeting will be at the Central office in Sundance, and of course, anyone who would like to attend is more than welcome!

New School Board Officers

Last month was our first meeting with the new school board. At that meeting, new officers were elected. For 2023, Chase Williams will serve as the Chairman. Dave Jagemann will serve as Vice-Chairman. Shane Wolf will be our new Treasurer, and Thayne Gray will continue to serve as the Board Clerk. Last month was a great meeting, and we are excited to see what the year brings. If you have any concerns or questions about the school district, you can always contact any of our school board members. Their contact information is available on our website.

Next School Board Meeting

Besides reaching out to our school board members individually, you can always address the entire board at the monthly meeting. The next meeting is Monday, January 16th, at Moorcroft Elementary School.

So, what are Purple Fridays?

That’s a great question, and I’m glad you asked! Once a month, a Friday is set apart for Intervention and Enrichment, affectionally called Purple Friday because that is the color of the day on the school calendar. Clever, right? Anyway, this is an opportunity for teachers to help two types of students. For instance, if your child is having difficulties in a particular area of study, this is an excellent opportunity for them to receive one on one or small group assistance to help them master the material.

The second type of student that would benefit from Purple Fridays is everyone else. The other focus of the day is enrichment. That means that teachers have the opportunity to go deeper with their students. The exciting part is that this can look like a lot of things. They may do some crazy science experiment that takes more time than a typical school day allows. They may teach a brand new skill that isn’t a specific part of the curriculum or bring in a guest speaker to teach the students something new. It varies from school to school, but you can be assured this is an excellent opportunity for your child.

If you don't typically send your kids to school on Purple Fridays, please reconsider. Purple Fridays are for every student, and they will benefit significantly from the available opportunities. The next Purple Friday is on January 27th. If you would like more details, please feel free to reach out to your child’s teacher or the school office.

Did You Know?

Every year on January 7th, Wyomingites celebrate Estelle Reel Day. Ms. Reel was the first woman elected to a state-wide office as Superintendent of Public Instruction. Want to learn more about her? Check out this informative website.

As always, if there is anything we can do to help you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Mr. Broderson at brodersonm@crook1.com, to any of our school board members, or feel free to call Central Office at 307-283-2299.

Let’s have a fantastic new year!
